Little Red (Miranda Perl) singing “I Know Things Now”. For this production, Little Red was a much more tortured character. While she sings about understanding the importance of knowing how to discern what is good to know by exploring and know by simply knowing, her character arch is very limited. This new found “Knowledge” she has by the end of act one is based solely on a black and white world where good is good and bad is bad. This is then challenged during Act 2 when she must learn that she needs to act on her own suppositions as opposed to what is “known” knowledge.

Jack’s Mother (Phyllis Davis) serves as one of the crux characters of this production. This ides of motherhood is epitomized through her character. One major theme of this production is the upbringing of desire and sin. Her death is the beginning of what will become the necessary death of all those who ‘gave birth’ to this corrupt society. Jack’s Mother encapsulates motherhood and gives example to the community in Into the Woods’s upbringing while Jack represents the new generation, born from sin, charged with the re-capitualtion to rid sin from the community.

This minimalist production utilized cast members throughout the entire production to coordinate set changes, special movements, etc. This is a photo from “I Know Things Now” where cast members are personifying the forest which drew her in as well as the wolf’s large mouth which swallowed Little Red and Granny. Each of these cast members also played other characters. The reason for having much of the stage movement be done by other characters is to show that this story and this society is a cumulation of the community’s sin. Everyone is to blame.

The Baker (Lloyd Brewer) and Mysterious Man (Mitch Davis) represent the inter-generational struggle of defining manhood and what it means to be a good husband and father. The Mysterious Man and the Baker are a perfect example of how younger generations need to not ignore or flee from the past generations but they need to learn from their mistakes and adjust accordingly. The baker needs to learn from his father’s choice to leave and decide to stay instead of doing the same.

Cinderella’s Prince (Malakai Howard) and Rapunzel’s Prince (Jeremiah Lamph) singing “Agony.” This song is easily the most farcical song in the musical.
